About Fairtrade

Billington's Fairtrade sugars are sourced from Malawi, one of the world's least developed countries. Like all our other sugars they are natural and unrefined, which means natural flavour and colour for all your sweetening needs.

Fairtrade is a path to sustainable development through a specific partnership of producers, suppliers and consumers.

The Fairtrade Premium paid for this sugar goes to the Kasinthula Cane Growers Co-operative (KCG) in Malawi. It is used to implement medical and educational programmes under the supervision of Fairtrade Labelling Organisation International (FLO).

With the Fairtrade Premium paid for these products, the first priority will be to provide clean water to three villages and then to build a secondary school and health clinic. By purchasing these sugars you will be helping these projects come to fruition.

Jameson Mabviko from the Kasinthula Cane Growers' Co-operative comments:

“I work hard in the fields, cane needs good care. I want many things for my life. I want to finish building my house, I want to make a good future for my family.”

As Brian Namata of the co-operative says, “ Buying Fairtrade sugar is a sacrifice because there are cheaper brands, but I hope people do but Fairtrade. It will give them the satisfaction of helping others.”
