Billington's

History

In 1858 Edward Billington, the youngest of twelve sons, set up a trading company in Liverpool. He started by trading tea and coffee but within a few short years he had added sugar to his imports and the rest, as they say, is history.

In the early days, Demerara and Muscovado sugars were imported in small sailing ships, packed in Hessian bags or wooden barrels. Carriers brought the sugar from the docks by horse and cart to a warehouse where the sugar was restacked by hand, repacked and delivered according to customers' requirements.

In those days, there were thousands of customers, each buying individually and often in small amounts. As the Billingtons family company grew, it came to be widely known as the specialits in the importation of natural unrefined cane sugar.

The Billington's of 150 years ago was, of course, very different from the company today, yet the founder's values of quality, integrity and fair trading are still absolutely central to the way Billington's does business.

The company developed strong, trusted partnerships around the world, focusing with suppliers on producing top quality products with the value added at source. Nowhere is this more true than in Mauritius where for many years Billington's has worked closely with local growers and producers to create the finest natural cane sugars available.

Billington’s now offers the most comprehensive range of natural unrefined cane sugars in the world. The name Billington’s is synonymous with the very best in brown and golden sugars, using our unrivalled experience and expertise to source only the finest sugars from our selected suppliers.
